The worlds most biggest flower - Rafflesia arnoldii

Rafflesia arnoldii is a member of the genus Rafflesia. It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on earth. It has a very strong and horrible odor of decaying flesh, earning it the nickname "corpse flower". It is endemic to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Although there are some plants with larger flowering organs like the titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) and talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera), those are technically clusters of many flowers.

World Animal Day 4th of October

Today is the one of the most important day for our Nature. Today entire world celebrates “World Animal Day”. World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated annually on October 4, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.


To help protect and save our Mother Nature we all should take care of the animals and birds that are wondering near our houses. Due to human evolution and rapid industrialization there are so many animal species which are extinct and many of are Endangered. It’s our duty to protect each of them because human cannot survive alone in the Nature without these animals, birds and most importantly the plants. So today we will decide to care for these animals and birds by many ways. For example we will start using eco-friendly bags instead of leather bags which will prevent killing of cows and buffalos for their leather. Also you can have some water pots placed in your balconies and on terraces so that birds can get drinking water during summer seasons. The most importantly all the parents should give awareness to their Childs regarding the issues with the animals and birds in our Nature.
As an initiative I will post information of some of the top endangered species from India. Today we will get familiar with The Indian pangolin. The information is taken from Wikipedia.

The Indian pangolin



The Indian pangolin, thick-tailed pangolin, or scaly anteater (Manis crassicaudata) is a pangolin found in the plains and hills of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. It is not common anywhere in its range. Like other pangolins, it has large, overlapping scales on its body which act as armor. It can also curl itself into a ball as self-defense against predators such as the tiger. The color of its scales varies depending on the color of the earth in its surroundings. It is an insectivore that feeds on ants and termites, digging them out of mounds and logs using its long claws, which are as long as its fore limbs. It is nocturnal and rests in deep burrows during the day. The Indian pangolin is endangered by hunting for its meat and for various body parts used in traditional medicine. Within its range it is variously known as saal khapri (Chhattisgarhi), polusu pandi or nela chepa (Telugu), eenampechi (in Kerala), azhungu or alangu (Tamil), bajrakapta (Oriya), kaballewa (Sinhala), and chippu handi (Kannada).
The Indian pangolin is a solitary, shy, slow-moving, nocturnal mammal. It is about 84–122 cm long from head to tail, the tail usually being 33–47 cm long, and weighs 10–16 kg. Females are generally smaller than the males and have one pair of mamma. The pangolin possesses a cone-shaped head with small, dark eyes, and a long muzzle with a nose pad similar in color, or darker than, it’s pinkish-brown skin. It has powerful limbs, tipped with sharp, clawed digits. It is an almost exclusive insectivore and principally subsists on ants and termites, which it catches with a specially adapted long, sticky tongue. The pangolin has no teeth, but has strong stomach muscles to aid in digestion. The most noticeable characteristic of the pangolin is its massive, scaled armor, which covers its upper face and its whole body with the exception of the belly and the inside of the legs. These protective scales are rigid and made of keratin. It has 160-200 scales in total, about 40-46% of which are located on the tail. Scales can be 6.5–7 cm long, 8.5 cm wide, and weigh 7-10 grams. The skin and scales make up about one-fourth to one-third of the total body mass of this species.
The Indian pangolin is solitary, mostly nocturnal, and terrestrial. In habitats such as Sri Lankan rainforests, they may be more arboreal, using their claws and prehensile tails as supports to readjust four legs as they climb. These pangolins dig their own burrows in the ground, at depths of 1.5–6 m; these are frequently under large rocks and the entrance is often hidden with soil. When in danger, they roll up into balls, with their large tails pressed tightly against face and belly to help protect themselves.
Although the Indian pangolin is protected by national legislation in many protected areas throughout its range, it is heavily exploited for its flesh, scales, and skin. Illegal demand has increased over the past 20 years. Populations are declining due to hunting and poaching for both subsistence and international trade. As they only have a single offspring per year, this high demand is starting to seriously endanger populations. Various parts of the pangolin are valued as sources of food and medicine. The scales are used as an aphrodisiac, or made into rings or charms. The skins are used to manufacture leather goods, including boots and shoes. The majority of hunting is carried out by nomads and trained local hunters.

Pangolins are the most heavily trafficked CITES-protected mammal. The two other Asian species of pangolins (Manis javanica and Manis pentadactyla) are also declining due to the market in Chinese traditional medicine.

As consumers demand the need for more paper, whether it's for newspapers, plain paper or books, we continue to cut down vast numbers of really old trees. It will take numerous years to see this turned over. Reusing and recycling paper is really important nowadays.

All paper, including books and magazines, are virtually wholly biodegradable, meaning they don't clog landfills for many years and will merely degrade into nothing. The fact that there is a need for more paper makes it appear daft not to recycle as much as we possibly can. That is why we should reuse and recycle.

The traditional means of recycling paper is by making use of recycling facilities. You will observe that where you dwell, there are opportunities to recycle, including in numerous cases your local grocery store. You may notice that your local area has different bins so you can sort your paper for recycling. So that the paper can be usable once again, the recycling process should be put in place. Books can also be sold instead of given away either locally or online. EBay and Amazon are popular places online where you can try selling your old books.

To sum it up, paper is being utilized more and more but fewer trees. Beasts use trees as a natural home ground and they are essential for the wellbeing of the environment. There are plenty of choices for us to recycle paper and to ensure that books and magazines are reused instead of thrown away.

Eagle


General Information -We all know Eagle for his strength and power. Eagle holds top position in the food chain as a predator. There are more than sixty species of Eagle in the world and most of them are found in Africa and Europe.

There are some species commonly found in India and Asian countries such as Indian spotted Eagle. Eagles are large, powerfully built birds of prey, with a heavy head and beak. The beak is typically heavier than that of most other birds of prey. Eagles' eyes are extremely powerful, having up to 3.6 time’s human acuity for the martial eagle, which enables them to spot potential prey from a very long distance. This keen eyesight is primarily attributed to their extremely large pupils which ensure minimal diffraction (scattering) of the incoming light. The female of all species of eagle known is larger than the male.

Nest- Eagles normally build their nests, called eyries, in tall trees or on high cliffs. Eagles don’t like human presence near their nests and hence generally the nests are built on very high trees or on the hilly areas where human and other animals can’t reach. The nest is made up of sticks, leaves and tree branches. The size of the nest is large so that nest can accommodate two hatchlings at a time.

Eggs- Generally two eggs are lay by Eagle. They are white in color. Some time only one egg get hatched and other get wasted. Around 37 hours are required for complete hatching and it is reported that the older hatchling will kill and eat the younger one. When there is food and water scarcity, Eagle parents’ hatches only one egg so as to manage the workload of parents.

Food habits- Eagles mostly eat smaller animals like rabbits, turtles, lizards, fish, frogs, snakes, squirrels and other smaller birds.

Life Span- Around 30 years.

Peacock (Indian Peafowl)


General Information- Peacock is a colorful bird commonly found in India. Peacock is famous worldwide due its colorful feathers and the rain dance. The male is called a peacock, the female a peahen, and the offspring peachicks. The Indian Peafowl is found mainly on the ground in open forest or on land under cultivation where they forage for berries, grains but will also prey on snakes, lizards, and small rodents. Their loud calls make them easy to detect, and in forest areas often indicate the presence of a predator such as a tiger. Peacock cannot flight at high altitudes and even cannot flight for longer distances, instead of that peacock can run fast to protect himself from the enemies. Peacock can fly for smaller distances with lower heights from one tree to another. Most of the time peacock presents on the ground for searching of food and water. Small bushes are the favorite locations of peacock as they provide shelter from the other animals. During mating seasons the male attracts the female by showing her the beautiful feathers. In India, it is believed that when rain comes, peacock starts dancing with feather show because peacock likes rain very much.

Nest- Peafowl are forest birds that nest on the ground but roost in trees. The nest is made of grass and tree branches. Generally we cannot find the nest easily because it is located in the roots of the trees.

Eggs- Peacock can lay 4 – 5 eggs at a time. Eggs are white in color. Around 28 days are required for hatching the eggs. Hatching is done by female.

Food habits- Peafowl are omnivorous and eat seeds, insects, fruits, small mammals and reptiles. They also eat crops such as groundnut, tomato, paddy, chilly and even bananas.

Life Span- Average 20 years.

Greater coucal (भारद्वाज)

General Information- Greater coucal (भारद्वाज) is a big bird from Asian country having brown wings on the black body with red color eyes. They are large, crow-like with a long tail and coppery brown wings and found in wide range of habitats from jungle to cultivation and urban gardens. They are weak fliers, and are often seen clambering about in vegetation or walking on the ground as they forage for insects, eggs and nestlings of other birds. They have a familiar deep resonant call which is associated with omens in many parts of its range.
Due to less flying power, these birds prefer walking and running near small bushes and often they are spotted during crossing the roads. Due to road crossing, many of the Greater coucals found dead due to striking with the cars. Greater coucals have spiritual importance in India. It is believed that watching the Greater coucal will make your day very good and happy. Also many people search for the bird on the Indian New Year which brings the entire New Year with happiness and prosperity.
Nest- The nest is built mostly by the male over about three to eight days. The nest is a deep cup with a dome in dense vegetation inside tangles of creepers, bamboo clump or Pandanus crowns. They can be built as high as 6m above the ground. But generally we cannot locate the nest easily.
Eggs- Greater coucal generally laid 3 to 4 eggs. The eggs are chalky white with a yellow glaze when laid that wears off. Eggs required around 15 days of incubation.
Food habits- Greater coucal generally eat insects, bird eggs, nestlings, fruits and seeds. They are searching the food on the ground around the bushes and on the grass land.
Life Span- Not available.

Nag Panchami Festival in India


 
Tomorrow we will celebrate another important Indian festival named as “Nag Panchami” which is related with worship of Nag (Cobra). In India, Snakes are considered as a God. On this occasion all Indians worship snakes (Cobra). Traditionally, married young women visit their premarital households to celebrate the festival. Especially in villages, an aspect of the celebration involves women swinging on swings hung on the tree branches and the parent of the young married lady gifts her bangles and ornaments.

According to Puranic scriptures, Brahma's son Kashyapa had four wives. The first wife gave birth to Devas; the second to Garudas; the third to Nāgas; and the fourth to Daityas. Nāgas were the rulers of Pātāl-Loka.

The names of the Nine Great Nāgas are Ananta, Vāsuki, Shesha, Padmanābha, Kambala, Shankhapāla, Dhārtarāshtra, Takshaka, and Kaliya

In Indian Puran, it is considered that God Vishnu rests over the bed of coils of Shesha Nag during the intervals of creation. The Nag has three kings, Vassuki, Takshak and Shesha Nag. Shesha nag is said to represent the ‘reminder’ when the universe is destroyed and the power of creation (Lord Vishnu) rests on its coils. The Nagas are dwelling in an underworld, called Nag Lok, which is an immense domain crowed with palaces, houses, towers and pleasure gardens.

According to Indian Puran, Lord Shiva wounds the Cobra or snake around their neck to get cooling against the adverse effect of poison stored in their neck.

On this day of Nag Panchami, cutting of vegetables, making chapatti, frying on the stove, digging the soil etc were prohibited. Hence in many families, women cook the food items only with the help of steam. Early in the morning almost all the women visit the ant hills to worship the god Nag, because in many cases the Nag (Cobra) lives inside the house of ants and at the evening women visit the local temple of Nag or Lord Mahadev and play many types of games. On this day young boys plays kite competition and enjoys the festivals as in many schools and colleges holiday is given on Nag Panchami.

When we look deeply inside this tradition we will find many scientific reasons behind celebrating this festival of Snakes. Snakes are the important part of food chain. A snake helps the farmers by eating the rats and insects from the fields and increases the productivity of the crops. Snakes do not harm or bite any individual unless snake feels unsafe or it is disturbed by human from its natural habitat.

Not only on the day of the Nag Panchami but on everyday it is our duty to protect the Snakes and Cobras. Snakes are part of our Nature and we should live together with harmony.

The Popularity Of Natural Perfume


Natural perfume, also known as botanical perfume, is the name given to any perfume that contains only natural ingredients. This means that the product does not contain artificial ingredients of any kind. The idea behind this product is that it is kinder to the skin and to the environment.

Modern living and political outlooks have paved the way for the natural perfume to become increasingly popular. However, the idea of it has always been around, and until the 1800s when synthetic materials were created, natural perfume was the only option. The synthetics were a breakthrough in modern science, and offered a valuable commodity for perfume makers. It enabled the product to have a longer shelf life and could also create more effects and blends.

Synthetic perfume is still excellent quality, but there is a modern trend for trying to recapture the essence of all things natural; and this includes with perfume. Botanical perfume is created from raw organics and rare aromatics, with natural extraction processes used. The aromatics are obtained through tincturing, enfleurage, infusion and distillation, and then added to a combination of carrier oil and water or a natural alcohol base. These bases are less severe than their synthetic counterparts and so it is less likely to cause an allergic reaction.

Allergies are a common reason why people are turning to botanical perfume. The high levels of pollution have made many people more sensitive and intolerant to many chemicals that would previously have produced no adverse affect. Natural perfume ingredients are in their purest form, and so the absence of chemicals creates less irritants and skin pollutants.

Another reason for the popularity of natural perfume is that it can be used to create a signature blend. In the modern world where mass production is the norm, many people are turning to the unique and rare to recapture a sense of identity. Natural perfume enables this. Firstly, synthetic perfumes are mass produced, and so it is down to the taste of the buyer as to whether they are purchased, whereas natural perfumes can be made bespoke.

These bespoke perfumes are created in relation to the tastes of the buyer, and are available for that buyer only. Many natural perfumeries are opening across the globe, where clients can go in for a whole experience which includes answering questions about tastes to determine a particular classification such as oriental, citrus, marine or floral. Then different base scents are tested, and those liked are then combined to create a signature fragrance, usually stored on a database for future purchases.

The ingredients are also a key factor. Natural perfumes often contain rare aromatics that would be too expensive to use in mass production. Therefore, it can offer a wider variety of fragrances. Another element to consider is the concentration of the blend. Synthetic perfumes have strict concentrations of perfume per alcohol and water base, which must be adhered to. Natural perfumes can step outside of these conventions, and create a strength that suits your requirements. Certain perfume may be based upon aromatherapy and aromacology theories also, to try and help assist with mood and health.

Of course, natural perfume does have its disadvantages also. For instance, the absence of any chemical fixative in the perfume, similar to the preservatives found in food produce, means that it is evanescent or short lasting. The ingredients in botanical perfume may separate also, as they contain no chemicals that bind, but this can be resolved with a gentle shake, so not too much of a problem but worth remembering. Natural perfumes are generally inexpensive and a pleasant change from the norm. Ultimately, however, they need to suit your requirements and needs; so weight the pros and cons and make an informed choice before purchasing.

Carbon Emission Trading, The Basics Explained


 
The Kyoto Protocol is a UN-led international agreement reached in 1997 in Kyoto Japan to address the problems of climate change and the reduction greenhouse gas emissions. The Kyoto Protocol went into force on February 2005.

Signatory countries are committed to moving away from fossil fuel energy sources - oil, gas, and coal, to renewable sources of energy such as hydro, wind and solar power, and to less environmentally harmful ways of burning fossil fuels. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are mainly generated by burning fossil fuels. Higher levels of greenhouse gas emissions cause global warming and climate change.

The Protocol commits 38 industrialized countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2008-2012 to overall levels that are 5.2 percent below 1990 levels. Targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction were established for each industrialized country. Developing countries including China and India were asked to set voluntary targets for greenhouse gas emissions.

The Canadian target for Kyoto is to reduce by 2012, greenhouse gas emissions by six percent below their 1990. The United States did not ratify the Kyoto Protocol, and in February 2002 introduced the Clean Skies and Global Climate Change initiatives, in which targets for reduction in greenhouse gas emissions are linked directly to GDP and the size of the U.S. economy.

Trading of carbon emissions is linked to a program called Cap-and-Trade. Understanding this concept is necessary to begin effective trading. A central authority (usually a government or international body) sets a limit or cap on the amount of emissions discharged into the atmosphere. Companies that exceed the cap may be subject to fine or regulatory sanction. Therefore, those who find they cannot meet the conditions of the cap will look to buy credits from those who pollute less.

Many older established companies are forced to spend considerable sums of money modernizing plants. In many instances this takes time, usually years to achieve. In contrast to new generation technologies which are not faced with up-grading facilities to comply with 1990 emission standards. Trading emission credits is a way for low emission companies such as wind farms to sell credits to benefit higher emitting companies. Cap-and-trade programs ultimately aid in being a net benefit to the host country by enabling it to meet it's commitment to the Kyoto Protocol Agreement.

From the very beginning, this first phase of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme, or EU-ETS, was intended to be a learning period to work out the kinks and entice major greenhouse gas emitters on board.

On January 1, 2005, the EU-ETS came online with the cap-and-trade program covering approximately 12,000 installations including electricity production and some heavy industry. These 27 member countries of the European Union represents roughly 45 percent of total European CO2 emissions.

Now three years later, amid a flurry of expectations and public controversy, the European Union has credible results to back up its claim of success. Recently, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology analysis of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) affirms that despite rather unstable beginnings, the system has been an unprecedented success. More importantly, it opens the door for skeptical countries like the United States to follow suit.

The United States would have been required to reduce its emissions 7 percent below 1990 levels had it accepted ratification of Kyoto. Instead, U.S. emissions have now risen more than 16 percent between 1990 and 2005.

The Bush administration and Republican lawmakers opposed to emission caps have been touting the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, which consists of Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and the United States. The aim of the initiative, which began in 2005, is to foster cooperation on ways to improve clean energy development and lower emissions without global mandates. But since the initiative started, the United States, India, and China have come under increased domestic pressure to move toward mandatory emission controls. California is among several U.S. states that have entered into partnerships or passed laws for controlling greenhouse gas ahead of the federal government, leading to a showdown with congressional lawmakers. Major U.S. cities have also instituted a host of policies designed to cut greenhouse gases.

Without the United States entering into a binding commitment, it is feared that several developing countries which have not yet signed plus some Kyoto signatories may be unwilling to agree to additional international commitments.

Geoscientist

Being a geoscientist is very much what it sounds like. You are a scientist who studies the earth, such as its structure, composition, physical aspects, and basically how it works. These scientists commonly help other scientists learn more about the environment, how to protect it, and how to fix what damage has been done to it. These green jobs require a Master's degree in a field such as earth science or geology.



Regional Planner


Those who have green careers as regional planners work hand in hand with developers and the community. They help communities figure out what the best ways to use space and resources is, while keeping growth and future change in mind. If you would love knowing that you helped to shape your community and make it a good place for the present and future, this would be a great job for you. A Master's degree in regional planning is generally required.



Landscape Architects

Green jobs like this also affect the community and how it is formed. They help design many important areas in the community, such as schools, parks, malls, and golf-courses. If you get a job like this, you would be responsible for making sure that the areas you work on are made to be functional and great to look at, while still being environmentally friendly.

One of the very best things about all these jobs is that they pay very well. You have to have a lot of schooling in order to be eligible for most of them, but it is well worth it. Once you have your degree, you can get a job in a field you are passionate about and be paid well for your efforts to improve the world we live in.

Backyard Bird Watching Is A Breeze


 
One of the best places for aspiring bird watchers to get their feet wet is in their own backyard. Backyard bird watching is an inexpensive and relatively easy way to get involved in birding as a hobby. While your interest may one day carry you to far away places in search of rare species, many find that they are more than satisfied by keeping track of the local bird life and enjoying the birds that live right under their noses.

You will want to do some research on what types of feeders are best for the birds that you are hoping to attract. Several styles meet the needs of many species. Some birds, however, require a specific type of feeder. You may find it best to construct your backyard bird watching area in a way that allows you to utilize several different feeders. Make sure you research how far away from each other the feeders should be.

Another decision that you will have to make as you are beginning your hobby of backyard bird watching is what to feed them. There is a wide range of feed available. Just like the feeders, the food that you select should depend in large part on what type of birds you are hoping to attract and where you live. Some of the more common types of bird feed are sunflower seeds, cracked corn, and thistle.

Often found in a mix, pour this type of seed into a hopper type feeder to meet the needs of several different species at one backyard bird watching station. If you hope to attract some of the more fickle species, like bluebirds, then you will need to do some research on what type of fruit or nuts make up the diet of bluebirds in your area.

When you are setting up your area for backyard bird watching, you should ensure that you have good view of the feeders from the area that you anticipate using for observation. If you have any low hanging branches that may block your view, cut them away before you begin your project. If you wait until you already have a contingent of hungry customers to do so, the sudden change in environment may disrupt the feeding and behavior patterns that they have established.

Now that you are ready to begin your observations, you will find that you need some kind of magnifying device in order to see the birds better. A basic pair of binoculars is usually sufficient for beginners, though you may find it better to mount a spotting scope near a bird watching picture window in your home. These optical devices will greatly increase your ability to identify birds and to get to them by their distinct markings and behaviors.
